Campaign Statement:

Life can change on the turn of a dime.

It is with sadness that I must announce my withdrawal from the City Council race. My family needs me now, and I will be there for them.

I am also announcing my endorsement of two candidates this November: Shane Burgo for City Council at Large and Zach Boyer for Ward 5 City Council.

Shane works at the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), which has been there for me personally. As a community activist, Shane is a champion of fighting the effects of COVID and the opioid epidemic in our community. You can donate and volunteer for Shane’s campaign at facebook.com/burgofornb.

Zach is on the Steering Committee at the Coalition for Social Justice, and his passion is helping our vulnerable seniors with housing assistance through his board position on the Council on Aging. You can donate and volunteer for Zach’s campaign at www.ZBforNB.com.

Shane and Zach are excellent, progressive voices that will bring the needs of the working class to the forefront of the New Bedford City Council. I know they will advocate and fight for us in this uncertain time. I will be helping with their campaigns as time permits.

I thank all our supporters and want you to know we will still fight on forward. We will make an equitable future together.

MEET MATT

I’m a local writer, the son of a Maderian immigrant, and an educator who knows we need community activism. For the last six years, I’ve dedicated myself to local politics and fighting for legislation to break the corrupting influence of money. Working with legislators, it’s become clear to me: we don’t need someone to push. We need someone to lead.

Our generation has the biggest obstacles we’ve ever faced: climate destruction; unaccountable public servants; and the biggest wealth inequality since the Great Depression. But the biggest obstacles are the greatest opportunities to soar. New Bedford has historically lit the world and now we have an opportunity to do so again, if we’re brave enough to pursue it. We need everyone on board – the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ community; our Cape Verde, Latinx, Portuguese, and other hard-working communities; and people of all faiths – to bring about the change that our future desperately needs. It’s time New Bedford leads again.
